Dear Colleague,
We are very glad to announce the 5th edition of the Summer Course on Arabic Codicology: the Islamic Manuscript Heritage in the El Escorial Collection, generously supported by the European project SICLE ("Saadian Intellectual and Cultural Life", ERC 670628). The course will be held in the framework of the Complutense Summer Courses in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid) from 2 to 6 July 2018. It will be taught by Prof. François Déroche (Collège de France, Paris) and Prof. Nuria Martínez de Castilla (Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Paris), who is also the director of the course.
This leading program aims at providing with the knowledge and academic tools for the study and analysis of manuscripts in Arabic script, focusing on a practical approach. We will have the privilege of attending the hands-on sessions at the Royal Library of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial(RBME), which hosts the most important collection of manuscripts in Arabic script in Spain and one of the most prominent in Europe. The course is designed for historians, art historians, philologists, documentary makers, antiquarians, curators, bibliophiles, conservation specialists, etc.., preferably with a Master’s degree.
The application deadline is 15 April 2018. Applicants can send their motivation letter (1,000-1,500 words), one-page CV and the attached form fulfilledto mss.arabicscript@gmail.com.Information about the course will also be kept updated on our Facebook page and website.
